Swales-Data Commentary

Knowing about how to write thesis paper more and more, I’ve realized how difficult successful writing is and how elaborate writing itself is. In that thesis paper includes some data which can be shown a form of a table, graph, and figure, this week’s reading was also very useful to understand how to read and write the data. Especially, selecting some verbs and adjectives can cause a difference and how they are expressed or organized results in a delicate or even big difference of connotation. Also, how to organize the statements, how to express specific numbers and how to conclude a commentary are all necessary, which I should study more. Though I found this reading very hard, through this, I will be able to be more interesting and more willing to read the data.

Thesis topic

As I mentioned before, I’ve been interested in cooperative works. Most students enjoy that type of class and, above all, their satisfaction pushes me to be more interested in it. However, it gives big burdens to teachers to prepare for class. And I have a doubt whether just a cooperative work is helpful for students’ achievement. So I’d like to write about “How a cooperative work can affect the achievements of four-skills” that will probably help my teaching skills when dealing with group works and help my students enjoy English class. Here are sub-topics.
1. How do teachers initiate the environment of cooperative works
2. How do teachers plan and do group works for each skill?
3. How do cooperative works affect the students’ achievement?

Swales reading

While reading, I’ve realized again how hard it is to write academically. What I learned in college is just basic things and actually, I haven’t had much knowledge of what kind of writing is academic and what is not. So this article is so helpful for me to go one step forward to approach to academic writing. All six considerations mentioned are important factors and all should work like an organism. Especially, those three parts-‘organization,’, ’style’, and ‘flow’-provide specific and practical ways. Also those are the parts that I should more practice. Though this is very beginning, I’ll try to study based on what ‘academic writing’ demands and develop writing skills.

What I want through Tesol course

After becoming a teacher, I came to know secondary English education emphasizes on living English and on student-centered learning activities, which is very different from my school days. When I was a student, grammar and reading accuracy is major focus, but now, communication ability is much more emphasized. So I need to change my view and train myself according to the expectation of the society. Through Tesol-mall, I will make steady and persistent efforts to develop my English skills and teaching skills. I want to study how to progress effective, creative and fun classes, how to treat all four skills-listening, speaking, reading, writing-appropriately in a lesson to enhance students' communicative competence and how to involve all the students into classroom activities. Also, I'd like to study and share the teaching plan and ideas with other teachers to develop useful procedure of lessons and activities. Through that, I want to become a better teacher that can contribute to motivate our students.

plagiarism thoughts

While reading, I was more interested in paraphrase and inference than plagiarism. As a teacher of middle school students, I haven’t thought of how to teach using paraphrases and inference in writing, though writing is a process that requires skilled abilities. Actually my students have a difficulty in writing even in a sentence level. Nevertheless I think teaching how to use those skills can be one way to improve their writing ability. So I agree that teachers and textbooks need to provide easy and effective information on paraphrases. It’s appropriate and helpful for my students to provide ways how to change into a similar word or expressions. Teaching how to express writer’s ingenuity there needs to be taught to upper rank of class.
This view was also interesting students who are used to reading between the lines in their L1, they come to realize similarities between L1 reading practice and inferential processes in L2. So teachers offer motivation for these learners to adopt such processes in L2 processes. I agree in that a lot of input can lead to a lot of output. And I think plagiarism is a kind of problem of ethical things. So before dealing with preventing plagiarism, it should be taught how to borrow the source and how to use quotation marks should be taught.
